we should all be feminists

“A CREATIVE ENERGY THAT COMES FROM GIVING ONE’S HEART AND SOUL AND IMAGINATION TO THE STRUGGLE. NOT AGGRESSION BUT FIERCENESS. NOT HURTING BUT CONFRONTING. NOT VIOLATING BUT DISRUPTING. THIS PASSION HAS ALL THE INGREDIENTS OF ACTIVISM, BUT IS CHARGED WITH THE WILD CREATIONS OF ART. ARTIVISM”

- Eve Ensler

“WE SHOULD ALL BE ANGRY. ANGER HAS A LONG HISTORY OF BRINGING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGE, BUT IN ADDITION TO BEING ANGRY, I’M ALSO HOPEFUL BECAUSE I BELIEVE DEEPLY IN THE ABILITY OF HUMAN BEINGS TO MAKE AND REMAKE THEMSELVES FOR THE BETTER”

- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

“BECAUSE I AM FEMALE, I AM EXPECTED TO ASPIRE TO MARRIAGE. I AM EXPECTED TO MAKE MY LIFE CHOICES ALWAYS KEEPING IN MIND THAT MARRIAGE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT”

- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

“AT SOME POINT I WAS A HAPPY AFRICAN FEMINIST WHO DOES NOT HATE MEN AND WHO LIKES LIP GLOSS AND WHO WEARS HIGH HEELS FOR HERSELF BUT NOT FOR MEN. OFCOURSE A LOT OF THIS WAS TONGUE-IN-CHEEK, BUT THAT WORD ‘FEMINIST’ IS SO HEAVY WITH BAGGAGE, NEGATIVE BAGGAGE”

- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I’ve had good times
with some bad guys
I’ve told whole lies
with a half smile
Held your bare bones
with my clothes on
I’ve thrown rocks
then hid both my arms
I don’t know what good it serves
Pouring my purse in the dirt
But I I I I I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more
I I I I I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more
I’ve played dumb when I knew better
Tried too hard just to be clever
I know honest thieves I call family
I’ve seen America with no clothes on
But I I I I I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more
I I I I I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more
I don’t know what I deserve
but for you I could work
Cause I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no morev I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more
I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more
I don’t wanna be a bird eater
no more
I don’t wanna be a dirt eater
no more
I don’t wanna be a cheerleader
no more

“THE FACT IS. SOMETIMES IT’S HARD TO WALK IN A SINGLE WOMAN’S SHOES. THAT’S WHY WE NEED REALLY SPECIAL ONES NOW AND THEN TO MAKE THE WALK A LITTLE MORE FUN.”

- Carrie Bradshaw (SATC)

I got to be unstoppable
I got to be unstoppable
Ey-ey-ey-ey!
You don’t lie
Ey-ey-ey-ey!
You don’t lie
I got to be unstoppable
I got to be unstoppable
Ey-ey-ey-ey!
You don’t lie
Ey-ey-ey-ey!
You don’t lie
0-0-7 mission
and it’s just one day
I marked my position
then I ran away
Got these boots made for walking
and some pepper spray
My two guns in my pocket
‘cause it’s brick today
I said, Hey, Mrs. Parker,
Can I get your spot?v The block’s too hot,
no parking lot
The joker cops,
they ticket, take my cash
The boys on the block
got eyes for my ass
I got to be unstoppable
I got to be unstoppablev Ey-ey-ey-ey!
You don’t lie
Ey-ey-ey-ey!
You don’t lie

“WHOEVER SHE SAW, A CEO OR WHOEVER, SHE’D DO THIS ‘FEET ON THE DESK’ THING,” RECALLED MAEDA. “IN MURIEL’S ERA, MEN WERE TOUGH, AND SHE SAID: I’LL BE TOUGHER. SO SHE SHOWED THEM BY PUTTING HER FEET ON THE DESK”

- Alice Rawsthorn about Muriel Cooper

“I FEEL LIKE EVERY TIME SOMEONE ASKS ‘WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE A WOMAN IN MUSIC’ THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS PROBABLY THAT YOU GET ASKED. AND EVEN ASKING IT SOUNDS LIKE ‘YOU POOR THING, WHAT’S IT LIKE?’ AND I’M LIKE: “IT’S FUCKING AWESOME”

- Annie Clarke

“BUT TODAY WE LIVE IN A VASTLY DIFFERENT WORLD. THE PERSON MORE LIKELY TO LEAD IS NOT THE PHYSICALLY STRONGER PERSON,IT IS THE MORE CREATIVE PERSON, THE MOREINTELLIGENT PERSON,THE MORE INNOVATIVE PERSON, AND THERE ARE NO HORMONES FOR THOSE ATTRIBUTES”

- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

“EQUALITY BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN, OR EVEN THE PRETEXT OF IT, TAKES A LOT OF WORK AND MAY NOT IN ANY CASE BE THE SUREST ROUTE TO SEXUAL EXCITEMENT.”

I know when you were little girls
You dreamt of being in my world
Don’t forget it, don’t forget it
Respect that, bow down bitches
I took some time to live my life
But don’t think
I’m just his little wife
Don’t get it twisted,
get it twisted
This my shit,
bow down bitches
Bow down bitches,
bow bow down bitches

Say I look so good tonight
God damn, God damn, God damn
Momma taught me
good home training
My Daddy taught me
how to love my haters
My sister told me
I should speak my mind
My man made me feel
so God damn fine,
I’m flawless!

“FEMINISM HAS NEVER BEEN SEXY, BUT LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT IT NEVER STOPPED ME FROM FLIRTING, AND I HAVE SELDOM SUFFERED FROM LACK OF MEN“

- Isabel Allende

“I’M ALWAYS LIKE, ‘I’M SORRY TO BE THE GIRL WHO WANTS TO TALK ABOUT FEMINISM, BUT THAT PERSON IS SEXIST’ SO THE IDEA THAT THE FEMINISM CONVERSATION COULD BE COOL AGAIN AND NOT JUST FEEL LIKE SOME GRANOLA BULLSHIT IS SO EXCITING TO ME”

- Lena Dunham

"We really should all be feminists", I thought back in 2015. And so for a school assignment, I decided to make a publication about feminism. Almost everyone responded like: 'Oh no, not feminism. Yuk.'. People I talked to, men and women, generally agreed about the necessity of equal rights, but still did not, under any circumstance, wanted to become associated with feminism. Feminism was considered annoying, mean, restricting, boring and also, just really not-cool.

For the design of this publication, I chose bright colors (which may be associated with the rainbow flag of the LGBTQ community, to embrace a wider view than just the men-women relations) and the Poplar font, which was designed by Barbara Lind. I also decided to illustrate some of the ideas by putting on masks of the featured women, enacting situations that a white, young European woman as myself could encounter and in which the feminist ideas were still applicable.

4 years have passed and the world has seen the #metoo movement, but I still feel like we could use more feminists, people who are willing to stand up for equality in a respectful, inclusive and decisive way.

Feel free to submit a quote, a lyric or a picture of yourself with a mask of an inspirational woman, so that this personal collection can grown and can be widened beyond my own experiences.
